Kevin Conroy lost his battle with cancer and died at the young age of 66, on November 10, 2022. He was an American actor appearing in a variety of stage performances, television series, and television films, but earned worldwide fame for his voice portrayal of the DC Comics superhero Batman in various animated media, beginning with the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. Alex Jaffe from DC Fan News poetically summed up how Kevin “Became Our Batman”. Click here to read the full article.
It was Batman: The Animated Series that reignited my passion for comics, animated tv shows, and video games. Bruce Timm’s rendition of the Dark Knight combined with Kevin’s acting and voiceover work brought this dark, gritty, realism to the character that had been missing for decades. Conroy went on to voice Batman in countless animated movies, tv shows, video games, and even played the Dark Knight in live action.
Despite being the voice of Batman in animation for over 30 years, Kevin Conroy only played the Bruce Wayne version of the character in live action, once! On Crisis on Infinite Earths event series, Conroy played an old Bruce Wayne on another Earth, heavily inspired by the Kingdom Come comics' version of the character. He wore a special suit to help him walk after decades of abuse his body suffered from being Batman. It was also noted that Superman broke his spine in this universe, which led to this Batman killing The Man of Steel. Too bad DC never put Kevin in a Batman Beyond live action movie playing old Bruce. I think that would have been the cherry on top for fans, as well as a perfect role for him to play.
Kevin had an amazing career and left a legacy that will never be forgotten. He will always be our Dark Knight. I love to go back and replay Batman: Arkham City, Kevin’s voice work is unforgettable, and spot on! Click here to see him in action.
